After release, the most important job is simple. Go to every court date, follow any release conditions, and keep your bail agent updated. The bond stays in place until the court exonerates it at the end of the case.
- Find the next court date and courthouse in writing
- Follow every release condition the judge set
- Collect money left on the jail account within about 30 days in LA County
- Tell your bail agent about any new phone number or address
The first day
Read the release paperwork before it gets lost. It shows the next court date, the courthouse and any conditions. Put the date in two phones. If the paperwork is unclear, the defendant's attorney or the court clerk can confirm it.
If your loved one was in custody more than three days, Jane Un Bail Bonds will bring a clean change of clothes. If your loved one is a mother who was in jail for more than a week, Jane will take her to a spa to clean up and relax before she goes home to her family.
Release conditions
A judge can attach conditions to release, such as staying away from a person or place, check ins with pretrial services, or electronic monitoring. Breaking a condition can lead to a new arrest and a higher bail. Ask the attorney to explain each one.
Money and property left at the jail

Cases can have many dates. Arraignment, pretrial hearings, preliminary hearing, motions and trial or sentencing. Each one counts. Jane is often in court to offer encouragement and support, and one family wrote that seeing her at the arraignment gave them strength to see the case through.
If something comes up before a date, call your attorney and your bail agent before the hearing, not after. A missed date is much easier to fix the same day. See forfeiture and exoneration.

Questions
Can my loved one leave California while out on bail?
Ask the defense attorney and the bail agent first. Some judges restrict travel, and the bail agent needs to know where the defendant is.
What if the court date changes?
Write down the new date and tell your bail agent. Date changes are common and are not a problem as long as everyone knows.
