Open the LASD Inmate Information Center. Enter the person's complete legal name and date of birth. A result usually shows the booking number, the facility and the bail amount when one is set.
LASD's own tip is to try the name both with and without a middle name, and to try any other names the person has used. New arrests can take a few hours to appear.

LASD inmate information is (213) 473-6100. Have the person's complete name, date of birth and the date of arrest ready. LASD does not notify families when someone is moved to another facility, so call this line again if a visit or a bail posting depends on knowing where they are.
If they were arrested by a city police department
Many LA County cities run their own jails. A person held there is not in the county system yet. LASD advises calling the city jail directly, asking for the watch commander, and asking whether the person will be released from that jail or transferred to the county Inmate Reception Center. Women held in county custody are housed at Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood.

Questions
Why can't I find someone who was just arrested?
New bookings can take a few hours to show online. The person may also still be at a city jail, which is not part of the county system until transfer.
Does the locator show the charge?
Locators usually show the booking number, location and bail. The charge details may be limited. A bail agent can help you read the booking information.
